Celebrating Ellen & Rhianne’s wedding in Hathersage
We had a joyous time celebrating the wedding of Ellen and Rhianne at Hathersage Methodist Church at the end of April. We are so pleased that we are able to offer the joyous and solemn occasion of a church wedding to all couples equally, and it was a privilege to be part of this special day with Ellen and Rhianne and their families and friends.
Eco-church award preparations in the garden at Edale Chapel
The garden at Edale chapel is being transformed. Our team of gardeners is increasing, with different interests helping to shape what we plant, harvest and use. For example, we are rotating one planter – our potatoes were very successful last year, so now we’ve just planted onions, garlic, chives and are getting leeks ready for that bed. The next planter is ‘companion planting’ with a mix of flowers and vegetables – runner beans, beetroot, chard, radishes, and spinach! Against the sunniest wall are all the fruit bushes and lavenders. Two of the gardeners have a special interest in herbs and their uses – and this is leading to a long herb bed and writing information panels about their uses. The principal focus is on bee-friendly planting and we are checking our readiness to apply for the Eco-church awards, – watch this space….
Getting Creative at Sunday Club
The children's Sunday Club group at Hathersage Methodist Church has been doing a series on 'People Jesus met' over the past few months. Our children are a creative bunch and each week they work on a different craft project linked to the story of the week. The Sunday Club team has created a fantastic display in the church Lounge to showcase what we have been learning.
Journey to Jerusalem at Bakewell
The church display once again told the Easter story of Jesus’s passion from the start of Holy Week –Palm Sunday – through to the Crucifixion and the Resurrection and four of the post-resurrection stories ending with the ‘Breakfast on the Shore’ with options to take part in different ways as the journey was made. Four hundred and two visitors came during the two weeks when we had the church open every day with refreshments and crafts as well. Fifteen people helped as Stewards and with setting up and clearing away – grateful thanks for all that support and commitment to sharing the Good News of Jesus. A visitors book was prepared in order to ask for comments or suggestions. It makes wonderful reading, with amazing comments from people who had come from far and wide through publicity and word of mouth. Many great conversations were shared and seeds sown. One church has since been in touch to ask if they could bring a coach load at Christmastime for “Journey to Bethlehem”. We have purchased a new banner for outside advertising “Journey to Jerusalem”. We also have two new ‘Welcome’ banners which the Peak Methodist Circuit have paid for, which we will keep at Bakewell for other events which other churches may borrow.

Celebrating David Attenborough’s 100th birthday in The Book Room
It's David Attenborough's 100th birthday on 8th May. Through his broadcasting and writing David Attenborough has transformed the way many people see our planet and humanity's place in it. As well as playing a unique role in celebrating wildlife, he has helped raise the alarm about the destruction of ecosystems and the rate at which species are being lost due to human-made climate change. The Book Room (the second-hand bookshop in Hathersage Methodist Church) is marking David Attenborough's 100th birthday with a 'Wildlife awareness' theme throughout the month of May. There is an array of wildlife books to browse or buy (all books £1), a rainforest jigsaw on the go, plus children's activities to join in with. There is also space in the church to pause to reflect on the wonder of wildlife and to mourn the loss of species in our world.Church and bookshop open daily 9am to 5pm
